Aidan O’Brien has confirmed a strong four-strong team for Saturday’s Betfred Derby at Epsom, with the Ballydoyle operation once again mounting a major challenge for Britain’s most prestigious Classic. The line-up is headed by recent Chester winner Benvenuto Cellini, who arrives in improving form and is expected to play a leading role in the contest at Epsom Downs Racecourse.

The Derby, part of the British Classic series and run over the unique 1 mile 4 furlongs of Epsom, remains one of the most significant tests for three-year-old colts in Europe. O’Brien, a multiple-time winner of the race, is once again relying on depth in his squad, with four runners declared as he seeks another addition to his impressive record in the race.

Benvenuto Cellini has emerged as one of the most promising members of the team following his convincing victory at Chester. That performance demonstrated both stamina and tactical speed, two key attributes required for success around Epsom’s undulating track. Connections believe the colt is still progressing and could have further improvement to come, making him a live contender in a competitive renewal of the Derby.

Alongside him, O’Brien’s team includes other well-regarded Ballydoyle runners, all of whom have been carefully prepared with Epsom in mind. The trainer has long used the Derby as a central target in his Classic campaign planning, often fielding multiple challengers to maximise his chances of success.

Attention has also been drawn to the fillies’ division, where stablemate Amelia Earhart has been installed as the 7-4 favourite for the Betfred Oaks. The Oaks, run over the same Epsom course and distance as the Derby but restricted to three-year-old fillies, has seen a reshuffle in the betting market following the withdrawal of leading contender Precise. This development has significantly strengthened the position of Amelia Earhart, who has impressed in her recent preparations and is now viewed as the standout runner in the field.

The Epsom Classic meeting remains one of the highlights of the British flat racing season, and anticipation is building as both the Derby and Oaks take centre stage. O’Brien’s strong representation once again underlines his dominance in middle-distance Classic races and his continued focus on Group 1 success.

With Benvenuto Cellini leading the charge in the Derby and Amelia Earhart topping the betting for the Oaks, all eyes will be on Ballydoyle as they attempt to extend their already remarkable record at Epsom.
