Brazil’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign began with a frustrating 1-1 draw against Morocco in their Group C opener in New York, leaving head coach Carlo Ancelotti concerned about his side’s performance.

Morocco produced a disciplined and energetic display, matching the five-time world champions throughout much of the contest. The North Africans took the lead when Ismael Saibari capitalized on a defensive lapse and brilliantly lifted the ball over Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker, stunning the Brazilian supporters and giving Morocco a deserved advantage.

Brazil struggled to find their rhythm in the first half as Morocco’s organized defense and aggressive pressing disrupted their attacking flow. Despite enjoying more possession, the South Americans found it difficult to create clear-cut opportunities against a determined opponent.

The breakthrough eventually came through Vinicius Junior, who delivered a moment of individual brilliance. The Real Madrid forward cut inside and unleashed a superb strike that left the goalkeeper with no chance, bringing Brazil level and reigniting hopes of a winning start to the tournament. His goal highlighted the quality Brazil possesses, even on a night when the team was far from its best.

After equalizing, Brazil pushed for a winner and increased the pressure in the closing stages. However, Morocco remained composed and resilient, defending strongly and limiting the space available to Brazil’s attacking stars. The African side also threatened on the counterattack, ensuring Brazil could not fully commit players forward.

Following the match, Ancelotti admitted he was worried about aspects of his team’s display. The experienced coach stressed that improvements are needed in both creativity and finishing if Brazil hopes to challenge for the title. While he praised the fighting spirit shown after falling behind, he acknowledged that stronger performances will be required in the matches ahead.

The result leaves Group C finely balanced after the opening round of fixtures. Brazil earned only a point from a game many expected them to win, while Morocco gained confidence and momentum from a hard-earned draw against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
